Running the Road to Recovery: From an Eating Disorder to a Healthy Body [VIDEO]

Over the past few weeks, our blog has been chock full of food tips and biomarker-friendly recipes for National Nutrition Month. This week, I thought it was important to shift our focus to a nutrition-related topic that probably doesn't get the attention it should, especially in the world of endurance sports: eating disorders – specifically, the challenges to performance they present, and of course, recovery from them.

In this video interview, I'm joined by the amazing Sarah Canney. She's a marathoner, coach, mom, InsideTracker power user, and advocate for eating disorder recovery. Sarah opened up about her own nine-year-long struggle with anorexia and bulimia, how it affected her performance and quality of life, and how she used InsideTracker to get a better handle on what her body was really trying to tell her. She now eats healthy fats like avocados, and consumes 2-3 times the amount of calories than while she was struggling with bulimia – yet she weighs less, performs better, and is happy and healthy.

The Road To Kona - The Ironman World Championship

Swim. Bike. Run. Easier read than done. Especially when you're talking about the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. This race, The Big Show - The Grand Finale - The Super Bowl of Triathlon - whatever you decide to call it, is iconic and will test your mind, body, and soul like never before.

This year 2,401 athletes competed from 64 countries for the chance to be deemed an IRONMAN at the memorable World Championship finish line. Among those athletes were four InsideTracker athletes: Kevin Portmann, Jeremy Behler, Erin Klegstad, and James Piper, and three of them were first time Kona qualifiers.

Top 10 Tips: Boston Marathon 2016

The Boston Marathon. The most historic marathon in the country. This 26.2 mile course leading from the suburbs into the heart of Boston has been run each year on Patriot's Day for 120 consecutive years. Yet, unlike other traditions which grow old, this one seems to renew itself each year with even deeper meaning. Being a Boston-based company, we'll admit that we're a bit biased. But, even those who have run marathons all over the world agree, there is something truly special about this historic race.

This year, we couldn't help but join in the revelry, and threw not one, but two parties to celebrate. The first, a shakeout run led by ultramarathoner, Mike Wardian. While you might think a 3-mile run would be nothing for someone who regularly runs 50+, he ran it completely blindfolded! The second, lunch and conversation with Mike Wardian, nutrition and fitness expert, Tawnee Prazak, and the co-founder of November Project, the free and fun fitness craze, Brogan Graham.

Most of us consider sneakers to be an essential part of our workout gear, but one group of runners has decided to forgo this mainstream piece of exercise equipment entirely. Barefoot runners are quickly gaining in numbers, and this trend doesn’t show signs of slowing! Barefoot running, also known as natural running or minimalism, is simply running without shoes or running in thin-soled shoes. Barefoot runners claim that this is the most natural way of running, and that it can even correct an imperfect form, which may result in fewer running injuries than those who run with shoes. World-class distance runner Ruben Sanca does not know the meaning of “slow down.” The Cape Verde native starred on the UMass Lowell track and field team where he became an NCAA Division 2 All American and won the 2009 NCAA Northeast Track Athlete of the Year award. I would not consider myself your typical graduate student.  I am a 22-year-old who recently relocated from North Carolina to Boston to study nutrition at Tufts University.  I run marathons, work out every day, give blood regularly, and am a picky, but healthy eater.  I will not lie and say I do not enjoy my victory pizza or a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream after a successful marathon because I do, but when I follow a strict daily food routine, I consider that my reward.
